Sorell History Collection

Welcome to the Sorell History Society's online collection where we record objects, books, biographies, maps and other information of local historic significance. Developed late 2025, the new system will be constantly updated as our volunteer curators add more entries.

The collection is a resource for further discussion and research, as well as  providing information for History Room displays, Pitt Water Chronicles articles, our web site, events etc. For some items, the physical location has been mapped  and related items linked to the record.

Look through a sample of items or browse the whole collection. To go to a specific topic, use the menu above, or the search box, or browse the map of geolocated items.

Objects in our Collection

Sorell History Society has a growing collection of artefacts, furniture, prints and paintings. Some are on display in the new History Rooms at the Sorell Memorial Hall.

Photos by 'Arch' Rollings

Albert Archer Rollings was a photographer based in Sorell. His collection of glass plate negatives were fortunately rescued by Robert Tanner then preserved and digitised by the Tasmnian Archives and Heritage Office. They provide a wonderful resource for research and a glimpse into the past life of the district.

Sorell Heritage Study 1996

In 1996 Sorell Council commissioned Ian Terry of Austral Archaeology to do a study of the municipality of Sorell's post European heritage with recommendations for their heritage listing status. Some of these places are no longer with us so this report and Ian's accompanying photos are a valuable resource.
