Description
-
The site for St George's Church was selected by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821. The foundation stone of the first church built on the site was laid by Governor Arthur on August 8, 1825, and the building, designed to accommodate 600 people, with large galleries to separate convicts from the respectable population, was completed in 1827 and consecrated in 1828.
-
It fell into disrepair and was rebuilt on the same spot using reclaimed materials from the original, in a similar, but much smaller, design.
The adjacent cemetery has headstones of many early settlers including that of James Gordon. Others are buried in the Henry Street Cemetery which was consecrated in 1823 before St. George’s Church was erected.
