KELLEVIE HALL

Title
KELLEVIE HALL
Description
1920s
Local community events in 1923 raise funds to build the hall. In 1925/26 the Kellevie Hall was built of local timbers at Kellevie Recreation Ground by George Mason and others. In April 1925 school teacher Mr Jones held a dance at Kellevie hall to raise funds for "the schoolboys to visit Carnarvon to play cricket". In 1928 a community celebration at the hall farewelled the Kellevie School teacher.
c1960
Hall moved intact from Kellevie Recreation Ground to council-owned land on Lewisham Scenic Drive
1980s
April 1983, Huon Barlow and others moved the hall by truck from Lewisham to Dodges Ferry Recreation Reserve. At the time, the only other building in the precinct was the Lagoon Farm farmhouse (demolished in 1985, now the site of the school's Lagoon Park playground). The Dodges Ferry Community Hall became the first clubrooms for Dodges Ferry Football Club and in 1987 hosted the first local kindergarten, before the primary school officially opened in May 1988.
1990s
The community hall building became a permanent part of the primary school, still used for community events out of school hours. In 1994 the hall's community role was replaced by the purpose-built Dodges Ferry Recreation Centre, a shared Sorell Council and school building including gym and change rooms, kitchen and kiosk, general purpose room and meeting rooms. By 1998, renovations for school use had removed the small stage and replaced the original entry door with a window.
2010s
Used for Outside School Hours Care (initially run by the School Association then outsourced to Gumnuts Childcare); the hall building became known as Ferry Hall. No longer available to the community, Ferry Hall is a classroom of various types, including kindergarten, art and music. Education Dept and Liminal Architecture plan was to build new Kindergarten classrooms initially focused on the Ferry Hall site, later moved to the beach side of the school after community input about the strong cultural values of the hall.
2020s
Planning for the state government funded $25m school upgrade canvases expansion concepts, proposing new buildings on the Ferry Hall site. Community inputs again highlighted the hall's cultural heritage values. SHS begins documenting available historical records and interviews. In 2026 the Sorell Council transfers the gym ownership to DECYP, committing to retain community access for out of school hours events. Sorell Council canvases options for Ferry Hall or other community meeting spaces in Dodges Ferry and surrounds. A community-led 'Save Ferry Hall' campaign begins.
